In the summer of 2026, Atlanta welcomed the world. Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosted eight FIFA World Cup matches, including a semifinal. For a city that already loves Atlanta United, it was a moment that put Atlanta at the center of global soccer, and it inspired a new wave of young players.
A city built for soccer
Atlanta's soccer culture has grown rapidly over the past decade. Atlanta United's arrival brought record crowds, and youth participation has expanded across the metro area. The World Cup added a new layer: kids in Atlanta watched the world's best players in their own city.
Turning inspiration into development
Excitement fades unless it turns into habits. Here is how families can help young players build on this moment:
Make soccer a daily habit
Inspired kids want to play. Keep a ball at home, find pickup games, and build a routine. Read Ball Mastery at Home: A 20-Minute Daily Routine.
Watch with a learning eye
When watching games, focus on one player in your child's position. How do they move without the ball? How do they scan? What do they do before receiving?
Find quality training
Choose training that develops skill, not just activity. Read Youth Soccer Training in Atlanta: How to Choose the Right Program.
Play small-sided games
Futsal and small-sided games build the touches and decisions that great players are made of. See Training in West Midtown at BASE Athletics.
Set long-term goals
The World Cup showed young players what the top of the game looks like. Help them understand the path, one season at a time. Read The 10,000-Hour Path to Pro Soccer.
Expanding access
Not every family can afford expensive club fees and travel. Growing soccer in Atlanta means opening doors for more players, regardless of background. Pro Path is a program of Rock Island Organization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and is working to expand affordable player development in partnership with the community. Our work was featured in The Atlanta Voice in August 2026.
The next generation
Somewhere in Atlanta, a 10-year-old who watched a World Cup match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is practicing in the driveway right now. With the right training, support, and opportunities, that player could be part of the next wave of American talent.
