Finishing Like Mbappé: The Repetitions Behind Clinical Goals

Great finishers make it look easy: one touch to set, one strike into the corner, goal. Kylian Mbappé has scored in two World Cup finals, including a hat-trick in 2022. That kind of composure in front of goal is not luck. It is built through thousands of repetitions in every type of finishing situation.

Pro Path FC is not affiliated with Kylian Mbappé. This article uses his public record as an example of elite finishing.

What clinical finishers do

  • Placement over power. Most goals are scored by placing the ball where the goalkeeper cannot reach, not by hitting it as hard as possible.
  • Both feet. Defenders and goalkeepers read one-footed players easily.
  • Quick release. Shooting with fewer touches gives defenders less time to block.
  • Composure. Staying calm, picking a spot, and executing.
  • Variety. One-on-ones, first-time finishes, volleys, headers, and finishes after a dribble.

Finishing drills for youth players

1. Corner targets

Place cones or targets inside each corner of the goal. Players shoot from 12 to 18 yards and score only when they hit a corner. Track the percentage.

2. Receive, set, finish

A partner passes from the side. The player takes one touch to set up the shot and finishes. Alternate feet.

3. First-time finishing

Balls are played across the face of goal. The player finishes first time, focusing on placement and body shape.

4. One-on-one with the goalkeeper

Start 30 yards out, dribble at the keeper, and choose: shoot early, round the keeper, or slot past. Decision-making is part of the drill.

5. Finish under pressure

A defender chases from behind. The player must finish quickly before being caught. This mirrors real breakaways.

6. Weak-foot round

A full round of shots using only the weaker foot. Read our 30-day weak foot challenge.

Technique checkpoints

  • Plant foot beside the ball, pointing at the target
  • Body over the ball to keep shots low
  • Strike through the center of the ball with the laces for driven shots
  • Inside of the foot for placed finishes
  • Eyes on the ball at contact, then look up

Repetition with purpose

Finishing improves with volume, but only if each rep is game-realistic and focused. Count shots, track accuracy, and gradually add pressure and speed. That is deliberate practice applied to scoring. Read Deliberate Practice vs. Just Playing.

Train it with Pro Path

Pro Path sessions at BASE Athletics include finishing in small-sided games, where players get shots from every angle under real pressure. Ages 9 to 17. Reserve a spot.
